Relevant Stimuli and their Relationships to Primate SA-I Mechanoreceptive Responses under Static Sinusoidal Indentation

چکیده
The key event in tactile sense about an object in contact with the skin surface is how the stress and strain subjected to the mechanical loading are transduced into neural impulses by the mechanorecptors within the skin. In order to investigate the mechanism of transduction by the mechanoreceptors, a biomechanically validated three-dimensional finite element model for primate fingertips was used to simulate neurophysiological experiments involving static indentations by sinusoidal objects. Altogether, eighteen mechanical invariants were obtained from the computed stress and strain components at nine receptor locations. Further investigation has been done to study the influence of external load, size of the indentor and vertical location of the mechanoreceptors on the spatial response profiles.

Encoding and Decoding of Shape in Tactile Sensing
This thesis is concerned with the biomechanical bases of tactile sensing and their implications to neural response of Slowly Adapting Type-I (SA-I) mechanoreceptors in the skin. In addition, possible non-linear mechanisms used by the central nervous system (CNS) for decoding tactile information from the afferent nerve fibers were also investigated. To investigate the mechanics of touch, a high ...
متن کاملTactile discrimination of shape: responses of slowly and rapidly adapting mechanoreceptive afferents to a step indented into the monkey fingerpad.
The representation of shape in the responses of monkey cutaneous mechanoreceptive afferents to steps of varying shape vertically indented into the fingerpad was studied. A series of flat plates was used, each with a step change in thickness in the middle so that one-half of the plate was thicker than the other. The cross-sectional shape of the step approximated that of a half-cycle sinusoid, 0....
متن کاملSurround suppression in the responses of primate SA1 and RA mechanoreceptive afferents mapped with a probe array.
Twenty-four slowly adapting type 1 (SA1) and 26 rapidly adapting (RA) cutaneous mechanoreceptive afferents in the rhesus monkey were studied with an array of independently controlled, punctate probes that covered an entire fingerpad. Each afferent had a receptive field (RF) on a single fingerpad and was studied at 73 skin sites (50 mm2). The entire array was lowered to 1.6 to 3.0 mm below the p...
متن کاملResponse characteristics of primary periodontal mechanoreceptive neurons simultaneously recorded in the trigeminal ganglion and mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus of the rat in response to trapezoidal and rectangular mechanical stimulation of a single tooth
Periodontal mechanoreceptors are dually innervated by primary neurons whose cell bodies exist in the trigeminal ganglion (TG) and the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (MTN). We obtained simultaneous recordings of singleunit responses of primary periodontal mechanoreceptive neurons located in the TG and MTN of the same animal to controlled experimental forces applied to a single tooth. Simultane...
متن کاملAnalytical Prediction of Indentation and Low-Velocity Impact Responses of Fully Backed Composite Sandwich Plates
In this paper, static indentation and low velocity impact responses of a fully backed composite sandwich plate subjected to a rigid flat-ended cylindrical indenter/impactor are analytically investigated. The analysis is nonlinear due to nonlinear strain-displacement relation. In contrast to the existed analytical models for the indentation of composite sandwich plates, the stacking sequence of ...
